Patent describes ways to make sure people don’t use invalid information in whois records.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark office has granted patent 9,275,040 to GoDaddy for “Validating user control over contact information in a domain name registration database”. Its inventor is GoDaddy Vice President of Policy James Bladel.
The patent application describes ways to verify that people don’t spoof whois records by using another entity’s contact information. For example, someone might register the typo GooDaddy.com and copy the whois contact info from GoDaddy.com, thus making it look like the domain name registrar actually owns the domain name.
Some ways to verify this information are to require further information such as a business license, match registrant information against a third-party database, or send a verification code to the contact’s cell phone.
The patent also suggests ways to prevent someone from pointing their domain to someone else’s nameservers without permission.
