Joseph Peterson recaps the past week in expired domain name sales at NameJet.
Not sure why the previous owner of Illness.com permitted his domain to expire – illness perhaps? At any rate, after slipping into a coma, this 19-year-old was heroically resuscitated by the efforts of 151 NameJet bidders. Now, after an injection of $12,742, the kid’s got a new lease on life; but he’s leaving home.
Among expired domain auctions, the second highest result last week at NameJet was HuiChen.com. While that is the full name of many Chinese professionals, $8.9k would be above average for such personal names. Even for a celebrity, it would be expensive; so I wonder if “Hui Chen” holds some other generic meaning in Chinese. JiangCun.com ($2.3k) might be a village; but when it comes to interpreting Pinyin as a non-speaker, I remain diffident.
GloBet.com ($3.6k) was an active sports betting website and had been one since 1998. Meanwhile, VoicePro.com ($3.6k) offered Voice-over-IP telephony. It too had been an active website as early as 1998, using a style of web design 17 years ago that’s still the prevailing fashion among parked PPC pages today!

Worth pointing out are 3 .ORG domains above that range from $1.1k to $3.6k. Expired domain auctions mainly fetch wholesale prices; so it isn’t every week that we see 2-word .ORGs like BestPractices.org beating out single-word .COMs such as Foragers.com ($1.4k) by a factor of 2 1/2. In contrast, .NET didn’t fare nearly as well as last week when it had a few mid $xxx sales or the week before when it rose even higher. Actually, come to think of it, .ORG had a 2-word $1.6k sale at NameJet last week as well.
Apparently, it was a good week for Pros; not only VoicePro.com ($3.6k) but FastPro.com($1.4k) and RatePro.com ($1.1k) sold. We also had a pair of excellent athletics phrases flexing their muscles: StrongMen.com ($1.2k) and TheLockerRoom.com ($1.7k). No, Cockle.com ($1.7k) isn’t porn-related; it’s the sea shell of a well known nursery rhyme:
Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row.
TVMA.com matches the “Mature” rating for TV here in the states, indicating that “the program may be inappropriate for viewers younger than age 17”. For examples of repeating patterns beloved by Chinese investors, consider T6T.com ($1.6k) and HKHH.com ($920).
Some LLLLs still function as acronyms outside China. ESNY.com ($820) is a case in point. How charmingly naïve of the real estate firm “Eklund Stockholm New York” (ESNY.se) to imagine it could do business in New York using its Swedish .SE suffix! In a country that resents Spanish appearing on signs in Spanish-speaking neighborhoods? How many Americans are even aware that ccTLDs exist?
Anupama.com ($685) is a Hindi girl’s name, apparently meaning “incomparable”. Kankanba.com ($631) shows up as a place in China and a surname in Ghana. Another surname, Politzer.com ($500), belongs to a domainer. You may have met him through DN.biz. Most of us will never own our own last name; so congratulations, Joe!

Without a doubt, the most famous Habanera.com ($407) – which is a kind of dance music originating in Havana, Cuba – is this saucy number from Bizet’s opera, “Carmen”:
Interesting to see both CRBLaw.com ($443) and EBSLaw.com ($210) sell during the same week. With no generic meaning that I’m aware of, these could abbreviate the names of partners in a firm. SharkRank.com ($309) looks like a pun or typo based on the well known TV show, “Shark Tank” – a series about entrepreneurship with some relevance to domainers, incidentally.

After seeing UserView.com score $897 above, here you’ll notice we have UserTrends.com at $210. Dierck.com ($249) is yet another surname. Five domains of the form “HG” + NNNN.com closed between $140 and $410. No, they aren’t aberrations. As a matter of fact, those have been selling for even higher prices at least as far back as October, 2014. And I’ve been documenting the “HG” + NNN versions in these charts for over a year. During April, 3 of these “HG” + NNNN monstrosities closed between $2k and $5k.

Exact-match domains – the so-called “category killers” – certainly do attract attention. Some drug smuggler with more vanity than stealth may one day be the proud owner of DrugSmuggler.com ($130). Sweetings.com ($121) brings to mind Shakespeare’s song “O Mistress Mine” from the play “Twelfth Night” – a lyric set to music by Quilter, Finzi, et al.:

PrePlanned.com was an astonishingly good deal at $130. The word has a straightforward application to preneed insurance, which is mainly about pre-planned funeral arrangements. Another dictionary word sold for just $69: Dispossessed.com. LooseOdds.com ($69) could refer to casino slot machines, which are said to be “loose” if the average payout is slightly less abysmal than usual.

Reventa.net ($75) means “resale” in Spanish. That’s what many of us do with domains, isn’t it? Quite apropos for a Spanish domainer! Weisheiten.net ($80) is German wisdom. DanseBretonne.com ($79) would be the traditional dance style of the Breton people living in Brittany, a region of France. And FaixaPreta.com ($80) is Portuguese for “black belt”. Coincidentally, I interviewed the owner of JiuJitsu.com last month.
Love these lists.. very informative.. great work as usual!
Thanks, Koosah
Great list. I thought HotelUSA.com was a stunning bargain.
It’s a solid name – clean, clear, short, and impossible to forget.
Adding “USA” to arbitrary keywords can sometimes seem cheap or corny if it’s tacked on without relevance (e.g. PoodleFanciersUSA.com). But in the case of hotels, geography matters a great deal.
Well, no. Not impossible. There is some ambiguity with respect to a developed website on the plural.
Illness.com is a regrettable drop… Same owner since at least 2001, his only domain name, a PhD in Georgia, age 65+. Never use the domain for your Whois contact email. Once it goes on hold, no more renewal or redemption notices.
That may be what happened. He was clearly using the domain at one point.
