A look inside GoDaddy’s domain name business.
How is domain name registrar GoDaddy handling the influx of new top level domain names? What is it doing to improve its domain name aftermarket and what’s the latest on Afternic? How does GoDaddy handle a growing number of search results for domain names?
GoDaddy SVP and GM of Domains Mike McLaughlin joins us on the show this week to answer all of these questions.
Also: a recap of NamesCon including a million dollar domain name auction, a big new TLD promoter and Chris Sheridan makes a move.

Thanks for the informative interview. Two questions.
1. When will Godaddy provide two-factor authentication to customers outside North America?
2. Why does it take so many steps if I’m interested in selling a few domain names (.com in this case)? Currently, I have to list them as Premium Listings and then go to check out and pay $0. Why not make it simple by having extra columns on the Domains page so that I can, say, click the Sell column and enter a BuyItNow amount on the Price column for each domain and it’s done?
KC – Premium Listings are eventually going away. You might as well just list them on Afternic, which gets you the same exposure (actually, more) at a lower commission.
Andrew’s right. If you list your domains as premium promotion on Afternic you’ll get the exact same coverage on GoDaddy as Premium Listings plus equivalent coverage on 17 of the other top 20 registrars globally, for 20% commission.
We are working on making the listing process even easier, but as of right now you are able to take full advantage of Afternic’s DLS distribution when your domains are at GoDaddy.
Hey KC! Wanted to update you on this 2FA topic. We do now support 2FA for international customers 🙂 https://domainnamewire.com/2015/08/27/godaddy-introduces-two-factor-authentication-outside-u-s/
Now that Afternic is part of GD, can I get my domain names listed on Afternic from within Godaddy or do I need to open an account with Afternic?
Currently Afternic. The plan is to enable it within your GD account.
Can godaddy please get rid of the $250 auction, I have so many people calling, and emailing me saying you have your domain listed in auction for $250, I will give you $200.
It is really misleading to many people, provides for a bad customer experience.
I would say I have dealt with at least 50 such inquiries in the past year, many have been phone calls, which are time consuming, and annoying educating people.
Robbie, I’m a bit confused. You have full ability to change the minimum offer price on your listings, do you need assistance in setting up a higher threshold?
I enjoyed this podcast! It was great to meet Mike at NamesCon too!
