Go Daddy releases details about Super Bowl commercial with .co
It’s kind of funny, isn’t it? Whenever people doubt (including me) the potential for a new top level domain name to go mass market, we often say “it would take a Super Bowl commercial to make a new domain name go mainstream”.
Today Go Daddy released details about its upcoming Super Bowl commercial featuring .co. While .co isn’t really a “new TLD”, it is being marketed as such. And this commercial will do a lot for .co, which has been marketed better than any other TLD launch to date.
“We think this new commercial will do for the dotCO domain, what our first Super Bowl commercial did for Go Daddy,” said Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons in a press release this morning.
The beauty of Super Bowl commercials is the pre- and post- bowl media exposure. Don’t be surprised to see .Co Internet CEO Juan Diego Calle get plenty of airtime between now and the big game.

I agree with you there. It has been the best launch of a new TLD to date. Kudos to the .co organization. Top class.

It’s really a good move fr godaddy IMHO a lucky symbiotic relationship for .co
A gamble of course as is all new advertising but the point will be “hey Sally, did you register your domain name? No suzie, why bother they are all taken!. Sally, have you heard about .co, they are all still available at GoDaddy and coolerthan .com. Golly gee Suzie, you are right! I can’t wait to get one for everyone in my family.” Of cousre suzie and Sally will be super hot and half naked too, and in tiny letters at the bottom of the screen for like a half a second will be “.co is from the country of Columbia and falls under their jurisdiction so good luck with that y’all”
This is my prediction in a nutshell for the format. The great unwashed eats this stuff up.
End result godaddy sells lots of new registrations, by proxy .co wins too. How much? We will see. Also Bob Parsons also gets a nice holiday present from Columbia as a thanks.
Anyways, what’s your predictions?

Depends on what you call mas market. I also doubt a .toulouse (for the french city of Toulouse) would interest anyone from Los-Angeles but I am sure it wouldn’t need a super bowl (or the rugby equivalent for Toulouse) to convince potential users there. Now it is possible it could take years to become profitable unless…
Joe says
Exactly. .CO is getting the exposure it deserves.

And they will continue to get more money through private sales… Will be good long term. It seems they have the cash to keep it going.
Will be top 3 ext in 12 months.

Everyone will think it’s a typo error, that is all those that are not Columbian.Go daddy try and sell it, it will end up like the company, pulled.
Will says
I’m lovin’ it! Go GoDaddy!

.co’s marketing strategies are now working. Way to go!

Pets.com and computer.com had super Bowl commercials as well.
I think it will mean very little in the long term.
Brad says
I wonder if they will mention .CO is the ccTLD for Colombia, or just gloss over that fact.

Bob’s one smart, hard-working guy … but if he thinks .co will be around in a worthwhile way (read: at least 100,000 developed, true operating company sites), he’s mistaken.
But; Bob may not care about that; or not much.
If his commercial brings in 100,000 new .co regs (since so many words/names are still available); even when these folks let them drop, he’s still profited big time.
Bob know how to make lemonade out of lemons:
Control the lemons AND the lemonade.
Steph says
I think its wonderful. I have already made over 60k from selling .co domains so this will just make it all the more profitable.
E says
@ Brad.
Are you implying there is something wrong with Colombia? The more you work that opinion, the more it sounds like bigotry.
Brad says
Nope. I am implying the marketing campaign is doing everything it can to ignore the actual meaning of .CO, the Colombian ccTLD.
Why they are doing that, you tell me.
Brad

.co = .com typo
.co = .confusion
.co = .con
