For the second year in a row, Sedo tops the Domain Name Wire survey.
Sedo is the top choice for parking domain names, according to a survey of 841 domain name industry participants. 48% of those surveyed picked Sedo as the best domain name parking program. Last year Sedo was the winner as well but only garnered 32% of the vote. In the 2006 survey Sedo only pulled in 19%.
With domain parking in upheavel, Sedo has escaped relatively unscathed. Sedo provides ads from Google, which hasn’t tinkered as much with its domain parking program as Yahoo over the past few months. However, Google recently started letting advertisers opt out of domain parking, which could have an adverse affect on short term earnings at Sedo.
Sedo offers two parking programs. It has a standard program and SedoPro, an exclusive program for customers with 200 domain names or $200 in month of parking revenue. [If you are interested in joining SedoPro, send an e-mail to editor (at) domainnamewire.com for an endorsement code.]
The top parking programs according to the survey are:
1. Sedo 48%
2. Name Drive 19%
3. Parked.com 13%
4. DomainSponsor 5%
5. Fabulous 5%
6. Active Audience 2%
7. Skenzo 2%
8. TrafficZ 2%
Other companies received 1% or less of the vote.
The survey also asked domainers which parking services they use. Most domain owners use multiple services. 69% reported using Sedo, 24% Name Drive, 22% Parked, and 15% DomainSponsor.
How is domain parking performing compared to previous years? Next we’ll explore earnings rates and general parking trends.
Great survey Andrew,
Sedo 1st, Namedrive 2nd… Bit of a wheez really being that these two companies viral marketed your survey to their members.
What makes it almost iconic to me is that they feel it necessary to self promote themselves to win a survey. Maybe that, in itself, speaks volumes more than them actually winning.
How Sedo won, being that they dont pay their affiliates for multiple clicks and have the lowest revenue share in the industry is anyones guess. But I suppose having the largest captive audience gives you a serious advantage when it comes to viral / self promotion..
Go Sedo…. (as far away as possible – as far as im concerned) 🙂
And do keep up the good work Andrew!
Sedo first – ha well – what a survey result
Sedo at #1 and Parked and Fabulous ranked lower?
I guess it does give me a chuckle, since it proves that there are a lot of people leaving money on the table.
I’ve had mixed results with Sedo. A lot of it depends on:
1. International — Sedo does a great job with this
2. Sedo vs. SedoPro
3. Search engines — I haven’t found another parking service who’s default landers do a better job getting into search engines. So even if one of my sedo domains only gets paid on the first click, it may get more visitors since it’s in Google
I have all of my international domains parked at Sedo and have hardly made any money with them at all. I thought they would be better with co.uk and .de domains but the pay rate is measly. I’ll probably move them elsewhere.
I’m really surprised to see that Sedo won this survey and I’m also surprised to see Trafficz at the very bottom of this list. I thought it was a big name in the parking biz.
I used to have my domains parked at Domain Sponsor but the links/search terms they provided on the webpages had nothing at all to do with the name of the domain (um, how about cellphone links on a cellphone domain name?) and sometimes the terms weren’t even actual words but fragments of words or half a word (i.e. “geos” or “mfrank”). It was really peculiar. They need a better optimization tool.
@ Antoinette – keep in mind a couple things. 1) the survey was no scientific 2) TrafficZ has fewer customers and is a bit more exclusive — making it harder to do well in a survey like this. I’ve been testing TrafficZ over the past month and have been impressed so far.
I wasn’t aware that Trafficz was a small company. They seem to have a big presence on the internet, advertising-wise.
I realize that the poll wasn’t scientific but I assume that the people who would take the time to complete the survey would have strong opinions, either pro or con. And to a newcomer, that is useful information.
@ Antoinette – TrafficZ is by no means small…that’s not what I was implying. But Sedo has 400,000 registered users. It’s hard to compete with that.
I cannot even find Sedo’s percentage sharing details for parked domains anywhere on their site. Just another scam operator who thinks we are dumb enough to sign up for a deal without even telling us what the deal is upfront.
At least GoDaddy.com lists the exact percentage you will receive.
Sedo sucks.
@ Bobaloo – GoDaddy is the only one I know who tells.
Sedo is a joke. I owned several domain names.. including vitaminshop.com cartires.com Sedo did not want to list my names in their auction because frankly they did not think they would sell. I sold several names for more probably then the entire sum of one of Sedos auction. Nice to have the last laugh.
to me sedo sucks.i hv never seen a company that has a login problem more tha sedo.
