A big milestone in the new top level domain name program.
It’s been a long at winding road to the introduction of new top level domain names on the internet.
It’s taken many more years than some applicants expected. For some companies, that’s meant multiple rounds of staffing up and then trimming employees.
But in July of 2013 the program hit a major milestone: the first new TLD registry agreement was signed with ICANN.
dotShabaka Registry inked the contract for شبكة.
The rest of the year has seen forward momentum in the program, with dozens of new TLDs being delegated. It’s now possible to visit second level domains for some of these newly delegated domains – albeit just at nic.TLD.
2014 will be the year of the new TLD. July of 2013 was a big milestone on the road there.

After observing the widescale adoption of the internet over 15 years and related domain name evolution, the introduction of more tlds still lacks a real justification. And lacks clear benefits. There’s a speculative upside for a handful of new registries and their backers, but the larger public doesn’t much care. Consequently, the numbers of registrations needed to sustain a new tld will just not occur. The addition of unlimited tld’s is still the equivalent of pouring gallons of chum into a fishbowl.
We’ll look back 10 years from now in retrospect and see that perhaps a few new tld’s caught on (a couple of hot keywords) in modest numbers.

There are so many new TLDs starting next year. Hopefully it will be indexed by Google.
