Get ready to pay more for .com domains starting in September.
Verisign today announced that it will raise prices on .com domains again this year. Prices will increase from today’s wholesale price of $8.39 to $8.97 on September 1, 2022. (Registrars add their own markup to this fee.) That’s a 7% increase, the maximum allowable under a contract with ICANN that is approved by the U.S. government.
For years, the wholesale price of .com domains was frozen at $7.85 after the Obama administration nixed annual price hikes. But under the Trump administration, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration granted Verisign the right to increase prices 7% per year for the last four years of each six-year contract extension. This will be the second price hike under the current contract, so you can expect prices to increase 7% again in 2023 and 2024, too.
Verisign struck its deal with the government before inflation hit 7%. I imagine that if this inflation level doesn’t end up being transitory, we can expect the company to ask for bigger price increases.
Disgusting… nowadays server’s can handle so much more than 10-20 years ago. End the monopoly, it’s already enough.
domains should really cost 5 bucks each. verisign doesn’t do much besides collect money.
This will be their downfall.
lol
Verisign only cares about their shareholders, just like every other publicly traded company.
But at least those companies own their own product.
Verisign is just a babysitter for .Com and .Net domain extensions for the US Government. A contract, that’s all!
Verisign is the highest paid babysitter in the World! Verisign is also the biggest domain squatter in the World, sitting on a product they don’t own and collecting millions of dollars profit at the expense of Domain Name owners.
Verisign likes to play both sides of the fence, but we all know what they stand for, greed!
They need to raise prices because 1.3 billions is not enough. Disgusting what they are allowed to do.
Well, good thing America continues to vote Republicans into office, just so we can continue to lose our rights, and raise prices, to screw over the middle class
if the so called middle class has issues with money……they shouldn’t be getting a .com domain, now should they?
They could if it was cheaper dumb***
