Marketplace is adding SSL to landing pages, starting with .app.
Domain name selling system Undeveloped.com is adding SSL certificates to all domain names parked on its service, the company has informed Domain Name Wire.
Starting now, you can park .app domain names on Undeveloped and the service will create an SSL certificate for them. The company is not stopping there; by the end of the week it hopes to have all domains on the service (including .com) using SSL certificates.
The move is important for a couple of reasons.
First, Google is requiring second level domains on some of its TLDs to have an SSL certificate in order to resolve.
Second, Google’s Chrome browser is steadily warning people away from pages that aren’t secure. This could reduce sales conversions.
Some parking services are getting around the SSL issue by forwarding domain names to secure page on the marketplace’s URL, but adding SSL to the individual domain names is ultimately a better solution.
Marketplaces can do this using the free LetsEncrypt service, but some programming work is required.
Very smart move by Undeveloped. The Internet has evolved and SSL is only going to become more important (required) as time goes on. The other parking companies would be smart to implement this as well.
The biggest dick move in history! Further proof that Google has gotten to big and thinks they run the internet. It’s totally doubtful, that they give a crap at all about the “security” of the web. This move is about profiting from the sales of ssl certificates, and controlling further traffic and making it more expensive for everyone to do business on the web. It will steal practicly all of the “profits” from small domainers who make their living using domain parking, especially those that utilize Domain Forwarding. Also for all of us the doing business on the web cost annually is now getting more expensive which means more profits for Google. It was appropiate for them to remove “The dont be evil” theme from their business motto recently!
I am not pro Big G in any way, but I don’t see SSL as anything malicious… There are free options out there for SSL, so I don’t really understand your rant. This story is about Undeveloped which is charging $0 for an SSL enabled sales lander.
In fact, Google is behind Let’s Encrypt, which gives the free certs.
For weeks all I have heard is that SSL certificates could not be scaled up…Well I would imagine many have now spilled their coffee and is now playing catch up. This is a major breakthrough for the Undeveloped team as we move to a more secure internet.
It is completely scale-able… Hosting providers have been doing it forever, and now Undeveloped has proven they could accomplish it with just a few weeks of development. I think it has been more out of laziness (since there was no necessity) than out of any argument of scale. So long as there are Free SSLs available there is no barrier. If LetsEncrypt pulls the plug one day then the argument would be different.
To add – this comment wasn’t directed at you – but jumping off your thought.
Thanks Michael!..I enjoy your participation within the domain community. It’s gotten all to quiet lately. Best to you.
With Google, in my opinion, it’s not always that simple. Try using a subdomain like hotels.nashville.com. You map it to the affiliate because you want brand awareness with your domain name. Visitors don’t want to leave your website when paying for something. Now you have to generate an ssl key from your server and deliver it to your affiliate that has to then send you back the secured key to be installed on your server.
Yes, we all want the internet to be more secure. I wonder how many of you had issues before that you now feel it is require that every mom and pop business get an ssl? How long is your ssl good for and how often do you need to go through this process? How many sites do you have to manage now including your subdomains?
You see, this just moves more people away from managing their presence on the internet or allow others to do if for them, Google, in a sense, is now like a virtual government and these requirement are what’s called regulations. Its brilliant in its deception.
Everyone loved the free Google analytics. We used to have our own server-side program that only we had access too. When Google analytics was then required by advertisers, that traffic was analyzed by not just you and the advertiser, but also Google. Wonder why 90% of internet advertising is not Google’s? I don’t.
Error correct alert!
I meant to say “Wonder why 90% of internet advertising is “NOW” Google’s? 🙂
Very well put.
Hard to argue.
Its about time! Secure internet we all need that
I love undeveloped.super easy to. Use amd park your domains. I have over 400 .app and .coms on there.
