ICM Registry, new TLDs, and Sony’s domain name renewal lapse all make the news.
The doldrums of summer are beyond us. Here’s a look back at July in the domain name business.
1. .XXX worth more with .Sex in the bag? – ICM Registry, which operates the .xxx top level domain, has settled the contention set for .sex. It plans to offer .sex domains to owners of matching .xxx domain names.
2. Sony forgets to renew domain name, takes down online gaming service SOE.com – another embarrassing example of a company forgetting to renew a domain name.
3. New TLD Luxury.Estate sells for $50k – Domain Holdings brokered the sale of real.estate for $50,000. That’s the most expensive public sale of a domain in a new TLD I’m aware of. Sedo says it brokered one for $100,000, but the name is confidential.
4. Investing in new TLDs? Hope for modest, not great, success of program. – Early investors in second level domains under new TLDs might lose out if new TLDs are a huge success.
5. Will new TLDs get a second wind? – Perhaps, but when?
