Domain security, new TLDs, and two sessions from NamesCon were popular news topics last month.
The first month of 2014 flew by, and there was plenty going on in the domain name business.
Here’s a review of the top five stories on Domain Name Wire last month.
1. Network Solutions auto enrolls customers into $1,850 “WebLock” service – Network Solutions sent an email to some customers telling them they were going to be charged $1,850 for a new service. It later said that customers will have to approve the service before they will be charged.
2. Domain Owner Alert: Whois verification phishing scams have already begun – whois accuracy phishing scams are nothing new, but they will increase this year thanks to new rules under the 2013 RAA.
3. New TLDs come out with a whimper – the initial batch of new TLDs are facing a number of challenges.
4. NamesCon keynote: Frank Schilling’s comments on new TLDs – since Frank Schilling is both a big .com portfolio owner and new TLD applicant, people tend to listen to what he has to say about new top level domain names.
5. What WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg said about domain names at NamesCon – Mullenweg discussed brand enforcement and new TLDs in a discussion at the NamesCon conference.
