What the…? Google to kill Google Reader

Popular RSS reader will be shut down.
I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn’t April Fools’ day after hearing this news: Google is shutting down Google Reader.
I’ve been using the popular RSS reader for many years to read domain blogs and other news sources, and transitioning to another RSS reader will be painful. The only Google services I use more than Reader are search and Gmail.
Worse, as a blogger, it could mean a number of lost subscribers. As of right now my feed has over 6,500 subscribers on Google Reader.
I assume (hope) that most of those people will subscribe with another RSS reader.
Google Reader is one of the few large RSS readers that provides subscription statistics, so it’s also a downer to lose this benchmark.
I realize Reader might not be a money maker for Google, but when a company abandons products like this it makes me less likely to invest time and energy in adopting its future products.

That is quite disappointing. I am in the same boat as you as to how much I use Google Reader.
As far as your blog goes, I doubt it will hurt your readership too much. Personally, I subscribe to DNW and most other blogs I read through my mobile device and GR, and I plan on finding a new PC option before GR goes dark.
Ditto. Google plans to shutdown iGoogle later this year too, which was a great product. I would pay to subscribe to those services, if only Google would continue them on that basis.
NetNewsWire on a Mac; can’t fault it.
Same boat here…
Had the same sort of reaction when I opened my reader this morning. Actually saw this post via tentative replacement Feedly. Can’t vouch for its quality, and it seems to be mostly a mobile app (it has a chrome app too), but the interface is kind of cool, and importing my Google Reader feed was a one-second job.
Out of curiosity, how did you rack up 6500 subscribers?
So: which tool now? Any chance it becomes possible to add RSS feeds in G+ ? Any idea?
I use it too are there alternatives?
Google Reader IS NOT DEAD!
http://SmashingReader.com is the alternative. The only one!
