66% think values will rise in 2012.
66% of domain name investors think values will increase in 2012 compared to 2011, according to Domain Name Wire’s 7th annual industry survey.
That’s the highest percentage since 2008, when 75% were bullish.
This year, 25% think values will be roughly the same as last year while 9% think they will fall.
What domainers think isn’t necessary a good predictor, however. Much like the stock market, it seems that investor sentiment is somewhat of a lagging indicator. At the beginning of 2008 domainers were similarly bullish, only for it to be one of the toughest years yet for domain valuations as the bottom fell out of the monetization market.

Of course it’s a lagging indicator – they’re basing their predictions on the previous year. ๐ Interesting to see though how many people jumped ship after 2008. The domain market is looking up right now though.

@ Steve Jones – so I guess that means the market was looking up last year, right? ๐

2010 and 2011 were awesome!
2009 was really tough. I doubled down and picked up so much inventory it’s paying in spades now.
I’d say the drops and auction markets are getting to expensive for investors. It’s getting overheated. Time to take a break and wait for the next dip and pick up then, or look to other pastures for deals in the interim.

Yup Andrew. ๐ Though we are also a couple months into the new year and at least for us, sales have been up this year so far.

I agree that things look bullish for the near term. What is gonna make .com domains not just increase but SKYROCKET is that the new gtld’s are gonna fail misrably. At that point, .com will be the only game in town and prices will go through da roof. .net and .org are now and will continue to be nearly worthless and the others such as .us, .co and .info are totally worthless. Supply and demand level one.
Domain Lo Mein says
Love your name, Thurston!! ๐
I see .us and .tv not going into the dumper, but most of the new gtlds will.
