3-D is certainly not a sure thing.
I originally read with amusement Michael Berkens’ 2010 article about 3-D domain names:
I sure blew this one.
But at least I’m not alone.
The next big thing is going to be 3D.
Berkens bemoaned the fact that he missed the boat on registering 3D related domain names.
I chuckled a bit at this because I think this is probably the third time in the past 15 years that entertainment executives said 3D was going to be the next big thing in entertainment.
But then in the year after that article was written 3D did take off, at least at the movie theater. We’ve seen more 3D movies than ever before.
So I was sort of wrong.
Yet this week Elliot Silver pointed to a New York Post article that suggested 3D was dead.
Indeed, it appears 3D in the home has been slow to take off.
What’s the net-net? Although 3D has exploded like it never has before, it’s still a long way from going mainstream outside the movie theater.
That means that your long tail 3D domain names are a long, long way from paying off.
Given the thousands of comments on Berkens’ original article, many of which talked about what 3D domains the commenters had registered, I think a number of people are going to take a bath. They won’t renew their domains after a few years.
When you buy domain names based on trends, keep in mind it could be a long time before those trends come to fruition.

Once they figure out a way to cut out motion sickness and headaches from viewing 3-d, then it may take off.
Or, perhaps, holo will be the next big thing.
Now I must go off to chase a cloud (or two).

It’ll resurrect again when the new Glass Free 3D TVs comes out. People right now hate wearing the stupid glasses.

I am sure Verisign thanks you for your optimism and renewal fees.

I think some 3d technologies are now ready. Simulators, medicine, movies. The rest will probably follow.

3D is just a stopping-point for the real holy grail: Holograms. 3D gives almost everyone headaches, and is technology that dates back to the 50’s.
If you’re not keeping up with Hologram news, you’re really missing out on what’s (nearly) here…

I think you said Andrew, It’s been spoke about being the next big thing three time before and nothing has really happend!

3d is still trending upwards.

3D is dead…because it’s only a “bridge technology” to the real “holy grail”.That being technologies that are to varying degrees IMMERSIVE and/or offer HAPTIC feedback.Creaive domains that prefixed or suffixed with ___mersive…or ____haptic have as good or better a shot than a 3d prefix.

3D will come alive in near future.

“That means that your long tail 3D domain names are a long, long way from paying off.”
Thanks for the lulz. I make over $200 a day from my long tail 3d names.
And I don’t care if I never sell a single one of them.

Agreed, I have several 3d names that have been consistent earners for the last year.
