Company behind WordPress choose .me domain for new power plugin.
WordPress has released a new jack-of-all-trades plugin to bring popular WordPress.com features to those who host their own WordPress instance.
Where will you find it? JetPack.me.
WordPress founder Matthew Mullenweg picked the domain name up last year by hand registration. It was previously registered to a New York man who let it expire last July.
I’m a .com purist. But in this case hosting on a .me will be no loss for WordPress. WordPress self hosted users have more technical skills than typical web users. They’re going to find this plugin regardless of what URL is used — or even if a specific domain is used at all.
I suspect most of them will hear about the plugin and download it through their WordPress dashboard or go to Wordpress.org.
The company also uses .me for its link shortener service wp.me.

As a WordPress enthusiast, I never knew that it was hosted on a .me domain, until I read this post. Wow. That was a great move. I’m not a big fan of .me, though. Thanks for sharing!

I noticed that one of the features of Jetpack is a url shortener: wp.me.

Mullenweg also bought the WP.com from yahoo awhile back. When asked, he wouldn’t tell us how much though.
Ed Muller says
It’s true, I am a New York man. However, this domain name generated about as much interest in the aftermarket as a wet diaper. I wish Mullenweg better luck with it.

@ Ed – yeah, I don’t think you missed out on any money for this domain 🙂
