Registrar launches new service to drive leads to local businesses.
Local advertising companies such as Marchex and ReachLocal have a new heavyweight competitor: GoDaddy.
The domain name registration giant today announced the launch of AdSpace, an online advertising service to help local businesses start generating leads online.
AdSpace is similar to services offered by competitors in this space. Customers provide some information about their business including description, logo, address, services provided, etc. Go Daddy uses this to create a hosted landing page. Then Go Daddy creates search advertising campaigns on Google Adwords with the goal of driving traffic to that landing page.
AdSpace tracks all prospect information including calls and clicks. It even records the calls so business owners can review them to see how well its employees are turning leads into sales.
The service starts at about $50 per month.

Bill Gates – live and let live. The word ‘bing’ was not invented by you. You have used it for your profit, however it is part of the dictionary. According to the Oxford dictionary, it was created in the 19th century. I am not sure until today how anyone can get a trademark on a dictionary word. Copied below the information I found explaining the word ‘bing.’
Origin:
late 19th century (originally dialect in the sense ‘sudden bang’): imitative
(bing)Pronunciation:/biNG/exclamation
indicating a sudden action or event:
Bing! They’ve hit you with something
Landon White says
Yeah,
So forget about it!

I think it’s a great idea, and think they can pull it off as it’s a known brand and business owners will trust them more than others.

How original. I’m sure the other players are in endless meetings trying to figure out how to best respond to this threat…! 🙂

@ Chris Nielsen – it’s not original, but you’re talking about a marketing force here. Millions of small business customers already in hand.

Now, where does this leave us domainers?
Actually, the local factor initiated by search engines and now GoDaddy, is surely going to be another blow to the already insipid secondary market!
Why would a smallbiz/localbiz invest in domains, hosting, design, seo, sem and other services (and the accompanying headaches) when they can get qualified leads for $50 to $100 a month?
