8 TLDs I’ll Express an Interest In

At $100 a pop, I’d submit an Expression of Interest for a bunch of new top level domain names.

Tomorrow ICANN’s board will consider accepting “expressions of interest” for new top level domains from applicants. On DNW Radio a couple weeks ago, Minds + Machines founder Antony Van Couvering suggested that these expressions of interest require a $55,000 payment. I agree that a substantial fee should be required to make it predictive of actual applications.

Others have suggested a lower fee, such as $100. At that price point, count me in. I want to throw my hat in the ring for a handful of new TLDs, just for the fun of it. Here are 8 TLDs I want and why.

.Catholic – The Pope won’t be excited about this. But think of the marketing opportunity! I’ll charge $1,000 per domain, which includes forgiveness for one sin or a marriage annulment.

.Things – The .sport Policy Advisory Council thinks no one should be able to apply for a TLD that falls “below” .sport, such as .basketball. So I’ll apply for .things and say .sport shouldn’t exist. I figure I’ll save .sport a lot of wasted money, anyway. Who would really want a .sport domain name?

.xxx – I’m just pushing along the arbitration process here.

.Comm – This stands for communists. Seriously, that’s the only reason I want one of these.

.Mobile – Can .mobi fight this?

.Park – All domains under .park will be parked.

.Advertising – Uh oh, here come AOL’s lawyers.

.You – After seeing how much fun people had thinking up names like Screw.me, I think this TLD will be a hit.

Feel free to add your own.

.huh – only 4 and 5 character names are allowed and they must be completely unpronounceable.

.101 – saves me a bunch of reg fees for all those Something101.com’s I keep getting.

.si, .see and .c – If you have to ask why, then you obviously don’t register enough typos.

.cel – mobile competitor to .tel

I could probably do this all day.

.squat – all domains must be trademarks, but not your own trademarks.

The dispute policy entitles you to transfer of a domain name if you prove the registrant actually has a trademark for the name.

I like the .Catholic biz model, although it´s hardly an original idea… St. Peter´s Basilica in Rome was financed in the same way ;) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence#Abuses

The people’s choices rarely change. ICANN will find THEY have to pay to have new TLDs considered by vISPs with Set-Top Boxes.

I know I know! I made one up that will be huge! I call it “dot com”. Oh, wait.

  9. December 9th, 2009 | 10:24 am

There will be more tlds than people interested in registering domains in that tld.

Thats actually the aim of icann.

Aside from making money at the cost of the small business, as usual.

When the deals were cut with The Clintons and Ira Magaziner in 1997 & 1998, people could not imagine a domain industry.

One of the selling points of ICANN to Ira Magazinar was that ICANN would ONLY do Proof-of-Concept Market Trials. The IANA “task” was not slipped in the back-door at the time. That happened while people were not paying attention.

As a TLD Market Trial company ICANN was supposed to develop ways to encourage “Communities” to form. People could show
their Expression of Interest by registering
    a name and developing it.

As people have seen, time has been needed to
re-architect the DNS system. It is very
different from 1998. Root servers are not
used and ICANN has no exclusive control.
The U.S. government wants to make ICANN one
    of many at this point.

People will now see that Free Market Forces
and a competitive domain industry will shape
the future. Premium Registrars pulled from
the Domainer population will now emerge.
One could not produce those in 1998 because
    there was no domain industry.

Many Chicken & Egg situations have now been
solved. There are many Chickens and many
Eggs. Some people do not like that. It is
part of the Internet Evolution. More changes
will be coming. There will be winners and
    losers. That is life.

.web – if the original applicants don’t get it that is

.hotel – readymade billion dollar industry

.solar – renewable energy is the only way forward

.sale – cheap stuff, on all the domains

Though at $100, I’d probably also want .surname

Enough dreaming, back to the real world. How many of these new extensions do you think will even be popular?
