Porn.com Sells for $9.5M Cash
Tuesday, May 15th, 2007
Moniker brokers largest publicly reported all-cash domain sale ever.
Moniker has brokered the sale of the domain name Porn.com for $9.5M in cash. This is the largest all-cash domain sale ever reported. The most expensive domain name ever sold is also in the adult entertainment industry - sex.com. Sex.com sold for approximately $12M, but that price included equity.
There’s a big difference between a cash domain sale and equity sale. For example, Business.com is frequently reported as selling for $7.5M. But this was in illiquid stock. It ended up being worth $2.0M.
Porn.com was originally on the auction block at the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. West show in Las Vegas in March, but did not meet its reserve.
Moniker recently sold another seven figure domain, Scores.com, for $1.2M at the Casino Affiliates Convention. Poker.com was on the block at the auction but did not sell (yet). Given interest for the domain, don’t be surprised to see Poker.com sell for over $20M in after-auction negotiations.
Next month’s T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference in New York City will be the next showcase for valuable domains. Among the domains at the auction are Bourbon.com, Student.com, HorseRacing.com, Elections.com, and Scotland.com.

What is the source of the information that it sold for $9.5million in cash?
Moniker

Moniker was the broker.
[...] News like this kind of makes you wish you could turn back time and snap up a ton of generic domain names like Porn.com, Business.com, Candy.com, Loans.com, Sex.com, RealEstate.com, etc… any domain along those lines is currently worth a small fortune. There is still a ton of money to be made in domain investing though…too bad I’m not making it. ;) The “real” real estate market might be cooling…but virtual real estate and domains are heating up!
