Cost of renewing or registering a .biz domain name will increase later this year.
Neustar (NYSE: NSR) will hike the wholesale cost of .biz domain name registrations 10% this fall.
The wholesale cost will increase from $7.85 to $8.63, an increase of $.78, effective September 1.
Public Interest Registry recently announced plans to increase the wholesale cost of a .org registration to $8.25.
While the wholesale price of a .com is now fixed for the next six years, many other registry providers have contract provisions that allow steep annual increases.
It makes sense for these registries to raise their prices the maximum possible. They’ve already built sizable registration bases, and extra churn from a 10% price increase isn’t as big as the revenue boost they get.
It will be interesting to see if this model changes after new TLDs — many of which will offer significantly lower registry fees — are released.
