Despite a recent announcement by one domain registrar, .io domains prices aren’t jumping.
Earlier today, domain name registrar Hexonet sent a notice to customers about a .io price increase. The message stated:
We have recently been informed about a price change by the registry for .IO domain names (registrations, renewals and transfers). As a result, we will update our pricing accordingly by 28% on April 15, 2024.
In talking to another registrar, it seems that this is misleading.
The .io registry hasn’t changed its “list” wholesale price in years, but it has changed its rebates.
The most recent change was in January, when the registry reduced the rebate, resulting in an effective 9% increase in wholesale registration costs. There have been no further reductions in rebates/increases in price announced since then.
It’s not clear why Hexonet, part of Team Internet Group, announced such a drastic increase. It’s possible it hasn’t changed its rates in line with registry increases over time.
