Seesaw price changes head in a good direction.
A week after increasing .net and .org domain registration prices, GoDaddy has dropped the price. This is the third price change in recent weeks.
First, prices went up to $13.19 each. Then they shot up another $2.00 to $15.19. Now they are $11.19 each including fees.
It’s clear that GoDaddy is testing pricing to see its effect on volume. My guess is the increase to $15.19 dropped new registrations and add-on sales substantially.
It will be interesting to see if GoDaddy will adjust prices when registry prices increase on October 1. I suspect it is already considering this increase in its price testing. I also wouldn’t be surprised if GoDaddy keeps the .com price at $10.19 even with the registry increase because this allows the company to offer a flagship product at only $9.99 (GoDaddy adds the $.20 fee like a tax).
Other domain registrars have started sending out notices about price increases, with most boosting .com prices $.40 to $.50. The wholesale cost of .com domains will increase 7% on October 1. The current wholesale price is $6.42 plus the $.20 ICANN fee.
