Lots of app developers use .io in their names, but it’s not what it seems.
8 of the games on the top free charts have a .io at the end:
- Paper.io 2
- Hole.io
- Bumper.io
- Ping.io
- Tornado.io
- Slither.io
- Paper.io
- Beetles.io
So a boon for .io domain name owners? Not quite. It doesn’t look like the game owners all own the corresponding .io domain names used in their app names.
Rather strange if you ask me.
.Io is the country code domain name for British Indian Ocean Territory.
it is great for .io domain holders for many reasons, but the traffic alone to these domains are crazy – at one point I was making thousands of dollars per day from parking on one single .io domain because it was the same name as a popular game
There is no .io button on my iphone. It’s just dumb not to use a .com in today’s .com world.
Fake news?
It all started with Slither.io & Agar.io, multiplayer browser games hosted on .io domain. .io games were and actually are very popular. They’ve migrated to smartphones and right now have nothing in common with .io domains, but “io” remains as a label for multiplayer games
I agree with you as users and webmasters often see it as a functional domain rather than a national domain
Game development for the app store is hit or miss – success is very rare and even the successful ones don’t make very much a lot of the time. I guarantee you there is no budget for a 40k+ domain name. Slither paid $25 for a .io and named their app accordingly – then when it did become successful others copy the naming to appear more legitimate – that’s what you’re seeing here. That’s why there are apps with “.io” where there is no matching website. They make money from the app, if there is a website it’s an after thought, it’s secondary. People who want to find the website will find it on Google, but again, not the priority.
Not everyone needs or wants a .com, but that doesn’t mean you’ll make any money investing in .io or other TLD’s. The entire reason slither chose the .io is there was no domainer looking for unrealistic amounts of money for a game/landing page for a game.
I understand the value of .com, but I wish domainers would leave all the other extensions alone for people wanting to actually create something of value (even if it’s just a silly game about a worm) Domain “investors” are a net negative to society, and are usually wasting their own money and creators time by rent seeking in extensions that were only created because they exhausted the usable .com namespace. Please stick to .com and leave the rest of us alone.
TL;DR: Don’t invest in .io
