Domains will be available during a limited matching period.
Verisign has released more information about its IDN transliteration launches.
As expected, the launches will include a Priority Access Program that allows existing registrants of second level domain names to buy matching domain names in the new IDN-as-.com extensions. This is similar to what ICM Registry did for .Porn, .Adult and .Sex.
Verisign and ICM Registry had originally hoped to continually reserve matching domain names at the second level, but ICANN wouldn’t allow it.
As a result, owners of IDN.com domain names will need to pay for the matching domain names during a limited period. Otherwise, they will be available for anyone to register.
Matching domain names will only be available at the same registrar where the existing domain is registered, and registrants will need to be sure their registrar will participate. (Otherwise, they’ll want to transfer their domains to a different registrar ASAP. The Priority period for the first domain will start in April February 2016.)
Also, domain names can still be registered by trademark holders during sunrise, meaning that owners of matching domain names won’t get a shot at the domain.
Hopefully the charge for existing owners is $0 or close. Splitting the names will turn idn.idn names into a phishing zoo. Imagine one domain name with 2 owners???? Crazy times.
“Period” and “porn” in the same sentence? I thought this was a family-friendly blog. 😛
I don’t follow. Does the sunrise period allow to register ASCII marks such as Nike, EBay, XO, … with .IDN extensions, or the second level has to be xn-punycode string? If ASCII marks are allowed, what and for who such ASCII.IDN names are for? Am I missing something?
Sunrise can be ASCII or IDN. Lots of companies have registered ASCII.IDN in sunrise for one reason or another.
And what exactly are those .IDN extensions? Where can I see that list, please?

From the previous comment chain, is the coming Verisign rollout also going to include ASCII.idn? Or is it just IDN.idn for the time being? Thanks!
This is AWESOME!! Hopefully with all the interest in short domains it will roll over into short idn’s. Typing short idn.com names in your native language will hopefully appeal to all of the new investors/business owners all over the World that don’t speak English. Fun times.
