Joseph Peterson reports on the past week in expired domain name sales.
What’s an UNCH? And how many of them would Dr. Seuss need to sell in order to recoup the $11.6k spent on UNCHS.org? Well, actually, some 36 years ago, the United Nations established its Centre for Human Settlements. Perhaps now they’ve finally secured a matching .ORG domain for their work on urban planning, upgrading slums, and so forth. Meanwhile, the corresponding .COM remains in the hands of Domain Holdings. No doubt, they see UNCHS.com as a versatile generic term.
Some people may be surprised to see CustomPens.com go for over $10k at NameJet. But pens ship easily and can be marked up in price thanks to design customization. Money well spent for a business owner …
911.cc is notable. By my count (referencing DNPric.es), there have only been 15 reported .CC sales above that $6.9k amount.
Valores.com means “securities” in the stock-market sense. Literally, it’s Spanish for “values”. Did it sell for over $5k? Maybe not. The domain was renewed 2 or 3 days before the overtime bidding war that raised its price 20-fold. So if it really was an expired domain auction, then the owner will be under no obligation to sell, rendering those bids meaningless except as an appraisal of his asset.
This sort of ambiguity is quite common in the domain industry. Bids and sales can’t always be taken at face value. Writing on each week’s bidding as I do, there isn’t enough time lapse to be sure that domains actually change hands.

Bizarrely, another ugly acronym .ORG leads last week’s GoDaddy chart. Weirder still, it seems to be related to urban planning too — just as we saw with UNCHS.org at NameJet. From what I can tell, IRPUMN.org belonged to the University of Minnesota’s Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity, which “investigates the ways that laws, policies and practices affect development patterns in U.S. metropolitan regions, with a particular focus on the growing social and economic disparities within these areas.”

This week, we can make some interesting side-by-side comparisons. Let’s start with the Chinese lucky number “8”. At NameJet, 880.org fetched $910. Add another “8”, and you’ll find that 8880.org went for $255 at GoDaddy during the same week.
Our other pair is something of a paradox. Last week at GoDaddy, CincinnatiWeddingPhotographer.com sold for $330. But CincinnatiPhotographer.com only achieved $87! The domain market is many things. Rational and consistent are a couple of things it ain’t.
Here is a small list of expired domain auctions for the coming week:
Domain Name | Venue | Domain Name | Venue |
---|---|---|---|
360Link.com | GD | CEP.org | NJ Pre |
DigitalExperts.com | GD | FortuneCasino.com | GD |
GCW.org | NJ Pre | GetADot.com | NJ Pre |
MREWholesale.com | NJ Pre | PHID.com | GD |
PokerPlus.com | NJ Pre | POSU.com | GD |
RAKD.com | NJ Pre | USTH.com | NJ Pre |
WU.net | NJ Pre | YIPP.com | NJ Pre |
WU.net is bound to sell for a bit, given its brevity and the fact that it designates a family of Chinese dialects. Poker and casinos tend to be profitable. And, disgusting though they are, MREs are bought in large quantities by people, which makes MREWholesale.com commercially viable.
Would anybody like to place a bet concerning which city will ultimately control WeeklyHerald.com? Just about every large city has a newspaper of that name. Also, please tell me a joke that can justify the $355 spent on RealEstateHumor.com!

Ambiguity… far too kind a word. Anyhoo, good chunk of research and interesting tidbits aplenty. Kudos.
