A unique gift this holiday season: renewing a domain name.
Domain name registrar Hover has come up with a creative promotion to help charities.
The registrar is asking people to support charities by renewing the charities’ domain names for them.
You can see a list of charities that have their domains at Hover here. All you have to do is click the charity link, add how many years you want to renew its domain for, and then go through the checkout.
You’ll also be entered to win a $500 Amazon.com gift card as an added bonus for helping out a charity.
Hover was the first registrar I’m aware of to offer no-login renewals, which makes this renewal idea possible.
Pretty neat idea. Almost as cool as auctioning off the world’s most expensive sugar cookie.
this “no-login renewal” thing is a disaster waiting to happen IMO. how long will it be before someone makes a claim for a domain stating that they paid for x years of someone else’s domain renewal? and all for just $10 a year!!!
but in the case above where it clearly states that it is a donation, an interesting idea. but then only 1/2 donors can do this… the rest would need to donate cash anyway. so really i can’t see the point of going to the trouble.
NetSol also did for a time when I renewed (and subsequently moved out) my domain name with them.
Hover is not a registrar, Hover is a reseller of the registrar Tucows.
@some1 – it’s owned by Tucows.
In 2007, Tucows bought a company called ItsYourDomain.com. We were an affiliate of ItsYourDomain for 7 years prior to its aquisition. This feature and many others, adopted now by Hover were originally created by IYD many years prior to its aquisition by Tucows.
