DealDash buys defunct rival’s domain name.
Remember Swoopo.com, the auction site where you had to pay for each bid? It shut down amidst controversy, and now a competitor has purchased its domain name via Sedo. UK based DealDash Ltd paid 10,000 euros for Swoopo.com and now forwards it to DealDash.com.
This was just one of many “end user” domain purchases over the past week. Here’s a look at 22 others. All took place at Afternic unless otherwise noted.
College Travel Experts bought FallBreak.com for $1,500. That’s a very smart purchase at a great price.

Freight company MegaPack bought SingleDelivery.com for $1,195. That’s a clever domain for a freight company.

Proactive Publications Ltd, which owns InsideIndustry.net for its magazine Inside Industry, bought InsideIndustry.COM for $1,650. Smart move and a cheap price.

I would interested in knowing how many of the buyers and sellers are aware that the details of their purchase is public?

Funny, I was wondering just the other day what had happened to Swoopo since I was still seeing many commercials and ads for similar sites. Had no idea they shut down. Likely a nice deal for the buyer there, getting the lingering targeted traffic.

I’m surprised by the ridiculously low prices. Many of these domains could fetch 10x the sales price and still be bargains for the buyers. The sellers are leaving a lot of money on the table.
If a domain owner only sells 1%-2% of his/her portfolio per year, which seems to be a typical rate, then the renewal expenses needed to support each sale are around $400-$800. This makes these sales profitable, but many only marginally so.
Many of these sales are of very long-tail domains, so the sell through rate may be much lower. In that case the domain owner is only treading water by selling at these prices, and may have little profit to show at the end of the year.
It would be an interesting exercise for these domain owners to raise their prices 10x and see what happens. They’d sell fewer names – perhaps half as many? Unlikely that it would only be 10% as many. And would probably end up the year much richer.
