Some companies get short domains through sunrise instead of auctions.
While some businesses paid hefty sums to win auctions for one and two character .uk domains recently — £3m in total — a few businesses took a cheaper route.
British Airways, Financial Times, and Virgin Enterprises each got their short domain names through a trademark sunrise period. The airline picked up ba.co.uk and the financial pub grabbed ft.co.uk. Virgin scored a major coup by grabbing v.co.uk.
