Domain conference canceled after failing to get sufficient registrations.
DomainConvergence, a domain name conference held in Canada, has canceled its show for the second year in a row.
In a blog post today, event organizer Frank Michlick wrote:
I am sorry to inform you that the DomainConvergence conference, originally scheduled to be held next week here in Montreal (May 12/13) is canceled due to lack of registrations. All paid registration fees will be refunded and sponsors will be compensated.
This is unfortunate, especially since the event was supposed to take place next week. Surely people purchased non-refundable travel accommodations. However, there will be a dinner/get together in its place.
Last year’s event was postponed due to a personal emergency and lower than expected registrations.
Some of us didn’t hear about it until last week, if he would actually announce things months earlier then maybe people would attend.
Will people now rush for Chef Patrick’s DNCruise instead? Sounds like a great alternative, especially for Canadians 😀
This is sad news for the Canadian domain industry as Canada has been severely lagging in promotion and adaption to the online marketing world had hoped this conference would get the fire going.
@Weird,
You can see upcoming domain events via http://dncalendar.com/ You can check that from time to time so you can stay in the know.
I’m sorry to hear the meeting was canceled.
Frank puts a lot of effort into it with no
(or very little) financial reward.
I congratulate him for at least trying.
It is good that he cut his losses now instead
of trying to put on a meeting with a handful
of attendants.
Frank, I’m sure next year will better.
First I had heard about it as well. Getting the word out seems like half the battle with these types of events.
Little to No parking revenues = Little Show Interest
We contacted all of the registered attendees before posting the news and have down our utmost to limit the cost occurred by them. Everyone I spoke to in person was understanding and supported our decision.
Ultimately I think there would be a higher cost in being away from your own business when there’s not enough value provided for the attendees, speakers and sponsors.
About 1/3 third of registrations for our events (sometimes even more) happen in the last week before the event and at the event itself, but this still would not have been enough attendees.
@Weird: I agree with regards to lack of promotion, this is something we will need to improve on should we hold another event. We did get some excellent help, but it was just too late for that.
Why don’t we just have a big BBQ at Zak’s house lol 😉
It was a great conference 2 years ago in T.O. The smaller crowd gave everyone a chance to really interact. Maybe moving it back to T.O would help?
Best Regards.
Just another sign of the good health of domain market…
I am so sad, I think I’m going to cry but we have to face the music.
Domain market is slowly dying
Actually, http://dncalendar.com/ isn’t kept up to date very well. DomainFest, being held next month in Barcelona is not on the Calendar.
@Christie: We’re in the process of updating/adding more, I just hired someone to help with it. Thanks for pointing out the missing event.
yep the gfc has struck again shame
