Just because someone got a bargain yesterday doesn’t mean you could have gotten the same deal.
By all accounts, there were some “good deals” in yesterday’s Moniker domain name auction. You may look at some of these final prices and think the buyer got a good deal:
Entrepreneurs.info $650
OrderManagementSystem.com $600
CompanyDatabase.com $665
GiftCertificates.info $777
TechnologyCareers.com $1050
But here’s the rub: if you wanted to buy these domains at these prices you would have been out of luck. I know, because I tried to buy them. If I would have kept bidding, these prices would have gone higher. Some would have risen to the point that they may have no longer been considered good values.
Consider TechnologyCareers.com. With the number of advertisers and searches for this term, I think it’s easily worth a couple thousand as an investment (and much more to someone with a development plan). I bid it up to $1,050. Each time I placed a bid another bidder took it a step higher. Who knows, perhaps that person would have bid all the way to $2,000, $3,000, or $4,000. At that point it may not have been a great deal.
(I walked away with four domains in yesterday’s auction, including Comptroller.com.)
So don’t kick yourself if you see a domain that you think went for below market value. If you entered into the bidding war, the price would have been higher than what you see.

Andrew, thanks for not bidding TechnologyCareers.com any higher. And you are right. I would’ve gone much higher for that domain.
Yesterday was like Christmas. I got seven gems for under $5K total.
Bryan says
I second that. Thanks for not going any further on CompanyDatabase.com 🙂
I was willing to go much higher and appreciate the price I paid.
Domain Investor says
OK, lets look at the other side of the transaction. Since, the bidders were reluctant to bid higher, realistically the seller did not get the best ROI.
He/she basically sold them wholesale.
If you are going to sell wholesale, why tie up a domain for 3 months (before and after) to sell it wholesale?
You could accomplish the same results by putting them in a Sedo auction or maybe sell it on the forums or threw a domain broker.
Other than a few domains, the sellers got the short end of the transaction.
(I did not have any domains in the auction.)

Andrew,
OrderManagementSystem.com was one of my listings. I was satisfied with that sale until I read your post. I’m kidding of course.
95% of the domains saw no action at all but the ones that did sell seemed to have some healthy competition going on. It seems many were targeting the same domains.

Hey everyone, you’re welcome 🙂
Once I got comptroller.com I spent much of my budget. I also got shacking.com, candyshow.com, and unionization.com. No one bid against me on those domains.
Tony says
Andrew, you made out like a bandit with Comptroller.com. Great buy.

I think so. It had been offered at auctions many times, but not with that low of a reserve. Some guy showed up and bid me up $750 above the reserve, but I still think it was a good deal.

Hey Andrew – welcome to auctions as that is how they work…..you had a budget and others had budgets higher and lower…I know you already know that so I am just kidding.
There were a ton of good names priced to get action and as some of you said, there was some nice action on some of the domains with multiple bidders.
I will state that I bet more than 95% of the names purchased yesterday were at great ROI for the seller….even those that were sold in the $300 – $1K range. most were purchased for $7 – $10 so that is exception ROI in any investment.
There are a bunch of names still available so if you are having second thoughts on some that you want to buy, we are working with sellers to get them sold. Just contact [email protected] with the domain you are interested in….as we work the after auction list pretty hard. Yesterday’s total was a very respectable $459K and we will go well over $500K with after auction deals.
Thanks again for all those that participated.

I must admit and I agree with others. Yesterday was a day of bargains. not all names that sold yesterday were bargains but the most were.
I sold 1 and bought 1 .. both were bargains.
Guys, congrats on all your purchases and sales yesterday and see you in next auction.

Good deal on comptroller! I think TechnologyCareers was worth a bit more of a fight, but the nice thing about being a domainer at the auctions these days is I rarely feel like I really missed out one one if I don’t get it. There is always another deal that catches my eye right around the corner. Its those domains I just can’t live without that get me into trouble. You win some, you lose some. It’s all about your portfolio as a whole and you’ve added a good one to your list.

Dub-A, what was your price on Comptroller.com? That is a category killer beyond words…
Post it here so we can all go “ga ga”! aaaaaacck!
Is “I hate you if you got this domain for low five digits” too strong a statement? (Seriously, I have no idea at the time of this post on how much you paid).
However much you paid for Comptroller.com, I’ll give you a free Successclick.com appraisal, low end:
Minimum Value of Comptroller.com: $75,000
8.6 million google results, but strangely only one adsense ad. But this is a HUGE PLUS for you, since you can pick up adword bids for cheap, while you build this domain into a directory for comptroller jobs… affiliate connects with Monster.com and yahoo jobs, etc etc. Okay, I don’t want to give you my development ideas for free, unless, of course, you want to send me a 25 year old bottle of scotch. THEN we can talk. 😉
Your other picks were very nice too. Congrats, you crazy madman (I got your number, Mister “I Look Innocent But I Will Rule The World”)
Who will back me up on this? Dub-A is on a mission…
Andrew Allemann says
Stephen – I don’t see the jobs value in this domain. In the private sector people spell it “controller”. It’s only in the public sector that the “comptroller” spelling is still used.
Oh, and I paid $5250
Stephen Douglas says
Hi Dub-A,
Well, you got it for a good price, and the public sector is where the movement is. If you don’t see the value in the jobs niche, where do you see the value in the domain?
