New service from creator of DNHour lets domain owners trade domains.
Domainer Koay Al Vin has been a busy guy the past couple months. First, he launched “Digg for domainers“, which seems to be getting some traction. Now he has a new idea, SwapNames.com, which just launched in beta.
SwapNames.com facilitates trading amongst domain name owners. If you spend any time in domain name forums, you will frequently see people offering domains for trade. Trading is a good way to balance out your domain portfolio.
The idea of trading merchandise through an online community is not new. For example, sites like SwapaCD.com allow you to trade used music CDs. One thing these bartering sites have that is difficult to transfer to domain names is a level of common currency.
You don’t have to find the exact person who wants your 50 Cent CD and who has a CD you want. Instead, you send the CD to a user and get a credit which you can use to get a CD you want from another member. This won’t work with domain names because of the wide value of domain names.
Still, I think SwapNames.com has potential, and it’s great to see new ideas like this popping up to support the domain name industry.
