There’s a reason advertisers pay a lot for data recovery clicks — losing your data is a pain.
There’s a reason domains like BackupandRecovery.com, MailBackup.com, and SafeBackup.com all sold for a couple thousand dollars over the past few months. There’s a reason advertisers pay several dollars per click for data recovery services. When it happens to you — a hard drive failure, that is — you’re willing to pay just about anything to get your data back.
This is a cautionary tale because it just happened to me. On Friday night my desktop computer started getting buggy. Then I experienced every computer user’s nightmare, the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). My computer is now at Best Buy and they are extracting all of the data from it that they can.
The irony is that I’m fairly good about having a backup plan for my desktop. I have an external Seagate hard drive. I back up my PC. The problem is I haven’t done it in about a month.
A computer failure is particularly painful for domainers. Missing out on domain auctions and drops can be costly. And if you’re like me, you have thousands of dollars of domain name related software on your hard drive. All of it has been downloaded and I don’t have hard copies of the programs, such as Watch My Domains Pro.
There are a number of good options out there for making PC backups as painless as possible. One is to have an external hard drive, like I do, but to back it up regularly. Another is to use an online service, but most of these won’t back up your programs (and you are handing your data over to another company). Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) has a new product called Dell DataSafe that backs up your hard drive on a second hard drive in your computer. It’s probably the easiest solution. The drawback is that if your computer is destroyed in a fire or flood you’ll still lose your data. An external hard drive can be stored in an alternate location or fireproof safe.
Hopefully I’ll be able to recover most of my data. If you want to snap up some domains related to data recovery and PC backup, here are some for sale. But I recommend backing up your PC first and shopping for domains later!
