I didn’t know what bird flu was when I heard about the sale of BirdFlu.com for $19,875 at Afternic back in March of this year. Now you can’t go a day of watching TV without hearing hysteria about it. The buyer of the domain bought it before bird flu became a common term, and the site is now ranked #1,360,017 on Alexa–up from a 3 month average of #2,659,138. Much of this traffic is from type-ins. $19,875 now looks like a steal.
Domain name investors can snap up good domains at a great price if they catch on to trends. You can even pick up unregistered domains before they become hot commodities–if you are an early trendspotter. How can you find out about the latest trends that might make good domain names? I do a couple things:
-Read forward looking magazines, like Wired, and look for new terms and buzzwords.
-Think about a topic you know a lot about. For example, if you work in telecom you might register domains related to new technologies such as IPTV.
Be alert. Keep your eyes open when you read periodicals or overhear conversations. You might just find a great domain investment opportunity.
While watching msmbc last week the reporter said a mild form of bird flu had been found at a turkey farm in central North Carolina but nothing has been in the local newspapers or in the Winston Salem newspapers. Why? I thought the newspapers job was to keep the public aware. Thank You
