Amazon’s domain name registrations this week indeed were for AWS announcements, but some are still to come.
On Monday I wrote about Amazon.com’s domain name registrations that foreshadowed services it was likely to announce at this week’s AWS re:Invent conference. Now that the conference is underway, we know what many of these domain names are for.
Monday domain registrations:
amazoninternetofthings.com, amazoniotplatform.com, awsinternetofthings.com, awsiotplatform.com, awsiotservice.com – We already knew what this is for.
amazonquicksight.com, awsquicksight.com: Amazon QuickSight is a cloud-powered business intelligence (BI) service
awsspice.com: This stands for Super-fast, Parallel, In-memory Calculation Engine (“SPICE”), and is used for Quicksight.
amazonsnowball.com, awssnowball.com: AWS Import/Export Snowball is a Petabyte-scale data transport solution
awsappfirewall.com, awswaf.com, awswebappfirewall.com: AWS WAF is a web application firewall that helps to protect web applications from attack by blocking common web exploits like SQL injection and cross-site scripting
amazoninspector.com: Amazon Inspector is an automated security assessment service that helps minimize the likelihood of introducing security or compliance issues when deploying applications on AWS.

New Registrations:
Amazon registered an additional 13 domain names yesterday, some of which correspond to already-announced products. A third-party registered a number of Amazon AWS related domain name yesterday using the Google registrar. They are for already-launched products. Amazon can recover these domain names through a UDRP or lawsuit.
amazonelb.com, awselb.com – These are for Amazon’s exising Elastic Load Balancer
amazonemr.com – The existing Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR) is a web service that makes it easy to quickly and cost-effectively process vast amounts of data
amazonrackspace.com, awsrackspace.com – Rackspace is now supporting AWS.
amazonspaceneedle.com, awsspaceneedle.com – Space Needle is at least the code name for a new analytics service.
awselasticsearch.com – Amazon Elasticsearch Service is a managed service that makes it easy to deploy, operate, and scale Elasticsearch in the AWS Cloud
awsmaria.com, amazonmaria.com – Amazon now supports MariaDB as a fully-managed service on AWS
amazonstoragegateway.com – an existing AWS service connecting an on-premises software appliance with cloud-based storage
amazontrustedadvisor.com – the existing Trusted Advisor service helps provision resources by following best practices.
awsbigdata.com – No product needed, it’s all about big data!
