UPS and other big companies have domain names expiring soon.
OK, so they surely have auto renew turned on. But isn’t this cutting it close?
UPS’ main domain name UPS.com, the one it uses to run its company, expires on April 8 and hasn’t been renewed yet.
UPS isn’t the only big company with a domain name that expires fairly soon. As I did a couple years ago, I ran through the Fortune 100 list of companies to see which ones have domains expiring soon. Here they are:
UPS.com 4/8/15
Chevron.com 4/14/15
Cisco.com 5/15/15
Wellpoint.com 5/24/15
SuperValu.com 6/3/15
Lowes.com 6/28/15
NewYorkLife.com 7/9/15
GoldmanSachs.com 7/24/15
Some of these companies came up last time I ran this list, they they haven’t opted to renew domains 10 years into the future like they can.
Maybe it’s just me, but this seems like playing with fire.

Why would they .com is dead no, or is that .xyz, I seem to confuse the two?

Since all of my domains auto-renew, I rarely monitor expirations, but what bugs me is that when I look on GoDaddy, I often see the renewals are almost always made at the last minute. I think that’s a bad policy, because if there’s an issue with a payment expiration or something else, it doesn’t give you much time to fix it.
Auto-renew should be at least 2 weeks ahead of the actual expiration, so that if there’s a problem, we won’t go into panic mode when there’s a problem.

Of those 8 names, I like ups.com the best. Looking forward to backordering it.

do you even know how this works tik5?
tik5 says
No, I do not know how this works. All I know is that hope springs eternal.
Mike says
Yep I am often surprised at how these large companies only register them year by year.

There’s also a believe (based on Google patents) that the expiration date of a website’s domain has search ranking effect.

Christopher Hofman Laursen says
The UPS guys should swipe the credit card for a 10 year renewal, when they see this.
Andrew Allemann says
They renewed, but just for a year.
JP says
Random pointer. Better to renew for only 9 years because if you do 10 years you lose the flexibility to transfer the domain to a different registrar for a year. Unless of course you want to specifically block the transfer from anyone including yourself. Then you can do 10 years.
Andrew Allemann says
Huh. Never thought about that. Good point.
Larry says
Huh? Sorry doesn’t work that way. You can transfer a domain that is maxed out. Obviously. You just don’t get an extra year tacked on.
Andrew Allemann says
After doing some more investigation, Larry is right.
