Big 2014 numbers from losing auctions, but domain registration revenue starting to grow.
Minds + Machines released some preliminary numbers for 2014 today.
It can be summarized as: it pulled in a lot of cash from losing auctions, and registrations of its domains picked toward the end of the year as it released more of them.
Here are some highlights:
Auctions – Grossed $36 million from losing 21 private auctions for new top level domain names last year; spent $25.9 million to acquire 6 contested domains.
Registrations – $3.7 million in registration revenue during the last four months of the year as it rolled out ten domains into general availability. That represents 107,000 registrations, 10% of which were at the company’s own domain name registrar. So far in 2015, the company has added 20,000 registrations, boosted from GA’s of .yoga, .work and .casa (the latter two had very low wholesale prices that spurred registrations).
Pipeline – 5 top level domains have entered sunrise so far this year (.fashion, .fit, .garden, .nrw, and .wedding). The company has 13 more uncontested top-level domains due to launch in 2015 and 12 remaining contested applications.
Balance Sheet – The company has close to $50 million cash in the bank.
