Feedback sought for conference calls with industry executives.
If you’ve never listened to a public company’s shareholder conference calls, they can be rather interesting. The company gives a canned overview of its latest quarter (or year) and goes through its financials. Then financial analysts are allowed to ask completely unscripted questions of the company’s management.
I think we could apply this same model to many domain name service providers to provide two-way feedback and improve industry dialogue.
For example, we could set up a conference call with the head of a major parking company. He would give a short presentation on what’s new with the company’s parking service and then open the floor to questions. Listeners can ask about ways to improve earnings, overall trends in revenue, and suggest new features.
I think this would be very productive for both domainers and the company. Domainers will be able to ask questions without the scripted nature of some company’s “webinars”. The company will get straightforward feedback and the opportunity to build goodwill with its customers.
Just like shareholder’s conference calls, the calls will be recorded for playback and transcripted.
I have a couple questions for readers:
1. Would you participate in these calls?
2. Would you prefer them to be during the workday or in the evening?
DR. DOMAIN says
I absolutely would participate…and no time like the present for the industry to get more involved with helping domainers develop their domains into viable brands.

I would be there, better during the day.
I doubt you will find a CEO willing to do this though. Too risky and no benefit unless they have something they want to announce.
So, you might only get companies that want to promote something.
Also, keep in mind, a conversation with the VP of Marketing is not “management” conference call. Needs to be CEO, CFO, COO… that level to be worthwhile and not just a big PR stunt.
Good luck. I hope you can find someone.

Great idea! I would love to have possibility to attend such webinars. Evening would be perfect for it – when everybody has time for it. This could be very helpful both for domainers, parking companies and others in domain business.

@Rob – depends on the size of the company. Honestly, sometimes having the CMO is better b/c they’ll talk more.

Great idea. Evenings would work great for me! 🙂

Andrew, I think this is a great idea … though, due to the various biz/ personal needs/ demands many (most?) of us have; to say nothing about the wide range of time zones everyone lives/ operates in; I’d suggest that you consider announcing the calls far enough in advance (say, at least 5-10 days) to allow all who want to, to submit questions (here and/or to you via e-mail); which you’d then ask.
You of course could still have live Q & A; but in this way you’d have a far higher “participation” level, with many more potential excellent questions.

ps Then, I’d make them available to everyone for later listening.

Sounds like a great idea. Evenings would be a good time for many interested outside of work too.
