Until recently .Pro domain names were rare and attracted little buyer activity. This was because of strict requirements for registering these domains, such as showing a license to practice in a particular field (e.g. doctor, lawyer). But the .Pro registry found a loophole in its contract with ICANN that let it offer domains more liberally.
One of Domain Name Wire’s readers, Michael Silver, reports that he is seeing sales activity for his .Pro domains. He just sold macau.pro for $1,900 on Afternic. He also received a $3,000 offer on marketing.pro which he turned down. Says Silver, “This should come as good news to those who have invested significant sums for the original purchase of these domains, while signifying a yet timely opportunity for buyers in the secondary markets to take positions in this new tld well before demand ripens.”
Will .Pro sales catch on? I think there’s plenty of opportunity in new and international TLDs right now. One word domains on .pro, .ws, .biz, .us, and .info might be ready to explode, partially because of their search engine potential. Indeed, Spain’s .es domain extension just became available for registration in the international community.
