Tech giant registers domains such as desktop.computer and computer.systems.
Microsoft has started registering generic/descriptive new top level domain names as they are released from the collision list.
Specifically, Microsoft has registered at least a half dozen domain names in Donuts’ domains that were recently released as part of the registry’s phased release of names:
- arcade.zone 7/1
- download.center 7/1
- developer.center 7/1
- desktop.computer 7/8
- datacenter.systems 7/8
- computer.systems 7/13
The domain names were registered after Early Access, but I suspect some of these domain names have annual premiums.
Each domain name forwards to relevant search results on Bing. This does not appear to be related to some sort of new TLD-specific Bing strategy, as the company regularly forwards unused domain names to Bing.
Update: here are some additional domains Microsoft registered: app.productions, computing.systems, database.systems, information.systems, learning.systems.

Two words (New gTLDs) will overtake two words (.COM)
Look better and are 3 characteres shorter

You are right!
Its funny when some people make illogical comparisons of newgtlds with dot-com.
Yes dotcom has had its major reign in the internet namespace, but new generic word TLDs are uniquely changing the norms.
One .computer domain I would’ve love to have, is — voice.computer but its already taken. And yes the domain is shorter, unique and more relevant than voice computer.com
Of course it would make sense to also have the .com version of the term.
If a tech giant like Microsoft chose desktop.computer over the dot-com, what does this tell us (in the long-run) ?

Microsoft is finding out that the only traffic they are getting is a few domainers that don’t click on ads.

Not really good for Donuts or the gtld program as a whole since the chances of any of these being actually developed into a full website are now ZERO. Large companies are .com power players and not looking to develop worthless .whatevers. These may have been registered as defensive plays.

Microsoft obviously saw value as these are expense generic terms to purchase. Making that investment means that Microsoft sees these as commercially powerful. Just because these domains are not developed today or next week does not make them less valuable today. In the physical world, real estate developers purchase land long before they place a building on it because they believe that the neighborhood will be developed in the future and they want to get in early. The same could be said for Microsoft’s new TLDs.

Well said, Jim.
Pessimists tend to forget, the reason why “domain investing” is called “e-real estate”.
If they have no real estate experience (strategy), then they are less likely to understand the newgtlds market.
Like I said earlier about newgtlds voice.computer vs veteran TLD voice computer.com
Only a company in the voice recognition space would know the importance of building a brand with either of the domains.
