Company hopes to offer second level domains to Telegram users.
Communications platform Telegram has applied for the .gram top level domain name.
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov announced the company’s application today on X.
Durov said obtaining the domain would mean “a billion Telegram users could get their own second-level domains–yourname.gram”.
He also wrote that users could set up interactive websites hosted by Telegram with one prompt.
Running its own top level domain could help Telegram prevent what happened last month, when the suspension of its t.me domain led to an outage.
Already, one other company has announced an application for .gram. Link Freedom Group listed it among more than 300 primary and replacement strings in its applications. This could create a contention set where multiple parties bid on the domain.
Unstoppable Domains will be Telegram’s registry service provider if the application is successful.
