Surge in registrations pushes domain base over 400 million for the first time.

There are now more than 400 million registered domain names, according to Verisign’s (NASDAQ: VRSN) latest Domain Name Industry Brief.
The company calculated there were 401.6 million domain registrations as of the end of the second quarter of 2026. That’s an increase of 9.1 million domains from the end of the first quarter.
.Com domains are by far the most common, representing over 40% of the pie. The .com base grew by about 3.0 million in Q2.
On a percentage basis, new top level domains outgrew country code domains and legacy top level domains with 34% growth. However, that’s on a much smaller base: there were 52.9 million new registrations at the end of the second quarter.
After .com, the largest domains are China’s .cn (20.9 million registrations) and Germany’s .de (18.0 million registrations).
