Growth in cybersquatting cases increased in second quarter of this year.
The number of UDRP decisions in Q2 was up 12% year over year, according to a newly published report.
GigaLaw’s Doug Isenberg, who is both a UDRP panelist and counsel, publishes a quarterly roundup that analyzes decisions during the quarter. Note that it’s based on decisions, not filings.
The report shows that decisions climbed nearly 12% year over year to 2,324, and the number of domain names impacted by those decisions was up 11% year over year to 3,349.
While it’s a sharp increase, the growth rate was lower than the 15% increase in decisions in Q1.
Ninety-five percent of decisions resulted in transfers or cancellations, and 5% of the cases were denied.
World Intellectual Property Organization led the way with 1,337 decisions, followed by Forum at 707 and Czech Arbitration Court at 202. The ADNDRC (Asia) and CIIDRC (Canada) handled fewer than 100 cases each.
The number of reverse domain name hijacking cases was down compared to Q1 of this year, with just 18 RDNH findings. There were 24 in Q1 on a smaller base of decisions.
