Domain owner must post $9.14 million bond to get domain back.
The State of Texas has successfully used its age verification law to get .com registry Verisign to suspend a domain used for a porn site.
Texas has a law that requires sites with “sexual material harmful to minors” to verify a user’s age, and it goes well beyond just having the person click a box affirming their age. Users must provide a government-issued ID, or the site has to use a verification service or similar mechanism.
In April 2024, Attorney General Paxton sued Kick Online Entertainment over one of its sites. The company did not respond to the lawsuit.
Now, Texas has obtained a court-ordered writ directing Verisign to suspend the domain associated with the site. It can only petition to get it back by posting a $9.14 million bond conditioned on implementing age verification that complies with Texas law and satisfying the civil penalties previously awarded in the case.
The Attorney General’s office announced the win while Paxton is apparently vacationing in Iceland.

I may be a bit dense, as this doesn’t make sense to me right now. I did a little cursory search on this, and it still doesn’t. What am I missing? What about the myriads and myriads of other adult sites then? There’s no way they are in compliance with anything of the sort involving Texas. Why is the story about just this one then? Why haven’t other far more famous such sites already been targeted?

Well said. You could even have said it far more damningly in the case of what we all are dealing with while only some even know what we are dealing with. Where have you been all these years while I’ve been practically the only real truth seeker and truth teller in the industry when it comes to blog comments, with only a few very partial occasional exceptions?

In case you’re wondering, I was briefly a fed before I got into domains ~25 years ago. I did not make a career of it. In a super prime location though. My life has been essentially divided into different chapters.
