Mira Holdings files lawsuit after losing a UDRP for orcid.com.
Domain name investment company Mira Holdings, Inc., has filed a lawsuit (pdf) in federal district court to stay an adverse UDRP decision.
On February 28, a Forum panel ruled that the domain name orcid.com should be transferred to Orcid, Inc. Orcid is a nonprofit that provides unique identifiers for researchers.
Mira Holdings acquired the domain for $6,312 in an expired domain auction on NameJet in 2022. This was after Orcid existed and had trademark rights, although the domain was originally registered in 2001.
Panelist Nicholas J.T. Smith reviewed a number of previous UDRPs filed against Mira and concluded that this case was most similar to one involving bowtex.com. He ruled that it was a coined term and that Mira Holdings should have researched it before buying the domain.
Mira Holdings also sued in the Bowtex case. It settled the lawsuit earlier this month and will retain the domain name.
