Organization will apply for .ens; rules block .eth.

Ethereum Name Service (ENS), creator of a naming system on the Ethereum blockchain, has announced that it will apply for .ENS in ICANN’s top level domain expansion this year.
The organization is well known in blockchain circles for its .eth “domains”.
Registrants of these names primarily use them as wallet addresses. Much like domain names replace IP addresses, .eth domains can point to cryptocurrency wallets that are difficult to remember.
ENS also works with traditional domain names, creating a bridge between wallet addresses and domains ending in .com, .net, and most others.
In terms of web3 naming systems, it has been relatively popular from a registration standpoint. About 1.6 million .eth names are registered, although most are likely registered for speculative purposes.
Of course, ENS would prefer to get the .eth top level domain. However, that name is blocked because it’s the three-letter country code for Ethiopia.
ENS has been active with ICANN regarding name collisions between alt-root domains, such as .eth, and the domain name system. It submitted a comment on the topic this week.
