Company files with court after becoming aware of lawsuit.
Not so fast!
That’s the message for heavy metal band Slipknot, which filed an in rem lawsuit against the domain name slipknot.com last month.
Yesterday, attorney Jeffrey Neuman entered a notice of appearance on behalf of the domain’s owner, Slipknot Online Services, Ltd. The filing states that the company just became aware of the lawsuit.
The legal filings state that the company has owned the domain name for 24 years.
The band Slipknot, which originated in Iowa, released its debut album in 1999. It still tours today.
While “slipknot” is a dictionary word, the band captured pay-per-click landing pages on the domain with ads for “concert tickets”, “Slipknot merchandise”, and “concert vip packages”.

The band doesn’t own the name “slipknot.” If it was Metallica, that would be different but “slipknot” is a term for a kind of knot. Why can’t they just use .net? These bands act like princesses.
Because slipknot dot com sold counterfeit merchandise of the band slipknot which the band has never received any money for.
No they didn’t
I physically felt my IQ drop reading your comment. Try reading more than the headline
This article makes no sense and is nonsense. Slipknots official website is slipknot1.com
So shut up
Are you dense? That’s the whole point. They use slipknot1.com because slipknot.com is taken and they want it. So maybe YOU shut up. Idiot.
Yes some do behave this way, however, Slipknot, LTD. just can’t sell Slipknot the Band, merchandise and concert tickets without their permission. You’d think they would know better. It is an infringement of their name as Slipknot the Band. Love from NYC USA
The lawsuit is not about the domain name itself. The suit is about how the unrelated website is using the band’s fame to get traffic. Baiting people with ticket sales and concert dates to get clicks that lead to a website unrelated to the band.
Metallica sucks
Unfortunately you can not copyright a “generic” term. So the band will probably lose this one….. especially if they have waited 25 years to just now worry about it.
Fortunately no band can copyright a name, even more fortunately, they can trademark it. Just like Slipknot trademarked, Slipknot.
Day job? I’m in desperate dire need of a Day Job…
Nice
They may not own the name or word or term, “Slipknot” but that isn’t what’s being disputed. There profiting by selling the bands merch and gaining Internet traffic on the band which name is Slipknot. The argument, “they don’t own the name” would only work if they were using the term slipknot in any other fashion except as in the band.It would be a different story of the site was about tying knots. I agree if I created something and dedicated my life to it, I don’t care how rich or famous it made me it isn’t fair for someone to profit off of my hard work and dedication
Can you even consider this an article? I thought there was more but I had hit the comments section. They should have had road runner buy the domain back before Iowa dropped or buy it themselves. Offer a nice junk of change and let that be that. Whats the point of registering good domain names of not to make a profit, its a whole business.
