Company says funding will help it bridge the gap between web3 and DNS.
Web3 naming platform Freename has secured a $6.5 million Series A round, the company announced today. That’s on top of a $2.5 million seed round it raised in 2023.
Like many web3 naming companies, Freename started by offering alt-root domain names that could be used as wallet addresses and otherwise integrate with blockchain systems.
The company offered both second level “domains”, as well as the opportunity to create a top level “domain” on its system.
Of course, none of these domains resolve in the traditional DNS, but the company says it has plans to integrate web3 and web2 technologies.
Freename is now an ICANN-accredited registrar. It also has a marketplace where consumers can register both its alt-root domains and traditional DNS domain names.
The company is also developing other products that integrate blockchain with traditional DNS.
Freename competes with D3, Unstoppable Domains, and other web3 naming companies.
Entrée Capital led the funding round.
