Cybersquatting cases, Whois, and .AI were top stories in January.
These were the top stories on Domain Name Wire last month, ranked by views:
1. Noon.com let a domain expire, failed to win it back in cybersquatting case – A popular ecommerce site in UAE forgot to renew its local country code domain. It tried (and failed) to recover it in a cybersquatting claim.
2. Court dismisses .wallet lawsuit – The judge said the issues were moot because Unstoppable Domains promised not to sue. You might understand Unstoppable’s decision more after listening to next Monday’s podcast.
3. Cripto.com owner sues Crypto.com owner, alleging reverse domain name hijacking – Subsequently, a WIPO panel decided not to resolve a cybersquatting case because of the pending lawsuit.
4. .Ai approaches 600k domains as handoff nears – Identity Digital is now managing the domain. Read a Q&A with the company here. One of the first changes: moving registry expired domains to Namecheap.
5. WHOIS is dead – Registrars and registries can officially turn off their Whois services as RDAP becomes the definitive source of domain records. They might not turn off Whois right away, though, as Tim Chen explained in DNW Podcast #517.
