Google Registry is gearing up to launch another top level domain name next month: .channel.
The early access period begins on February 4. During this phase, anyone can register a domain for a premium price. It will follow a Dutch Auction format, with prices lowering each day for seven days.
Following early access, the general availability period will begin on February 11.
While registry pricing is generally confidential, it appears .channel will be priced around $20-$30 retail. 101domain is offering new registrations in general availability for $19.99, with renewals for $27.99.
101domain’s early access period will start at $11,999 on day one, drop to $3,599 on the second day, and continue dropping until it concludes at $149 on the seventh day.
Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is pitching the domain for content monetization, suggesting that creators use it to sell products online.
I am confused…I though ICANN is the “authority” to create the DNS. Ok, so I haven’t been paying attention…I only do .com’s…so basically a Sponsored Top-level Domains (sTLD) can create whatever they want/pay for in turn charge you for…expanding this market which is created out of thin air…nope, has no validity for me. Besides, wasn’t channels a failed part of Microsoft back in the 90’s? and who wants to type all that into the url?
