Chat.com sells for $15M plus to ChatGPT company OpenAI.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and perhaps the most ideal company to own the domain name, has acquired chat.com.
HubSpot founder Dharmesh Shah originally bought the domain last year, plunking down over $15.5 million for the domain name. He turned around and sold the domain shortly thereafter for a profit, but he didn’t name the buyer.
Now, it is confirmed that OpenAI was the buyer. Shah confirmed that he took some of the purchase price in shares.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted a one-word tweet this morning, stating merely “chat.com”.

Note: the original version of this story said the domain sold three times: once to Shah, another time between Shah and an unknown buyer, and then from the unknown buyer to OpenAI. It turns out Shaw sold the domain directly to OpenAI, and it just took the company a while before announcing the purchse.

An incredibly smart move and one that will propel the company into one of the most valuable on earth!
