Marby exits ICANN with over a year left on his contract.
ICANN announced today that Göran Marby has stepped down as CEO.
The surprising decision comes with about 18 months remaining on Marby’s contract. The contract was previously set to expire in May 2022, but the board extended the contract to 2024 in October 2020.
Marby spent six and a half years at the helm of ICANN. Like most ICANN CEOs, he had both his fans and detractors. In fact, two ICANN directors did not vote in favor of the contract extension granted in 2020.
ICANN will begin its hunt for a new CEO next year. In the meantime, Sally Costerton, ICANN Senior Advisor to the President and Senior Vice President, Global Stakeholder Engagement, has been named Interim President and CEO.
Marby will be available to consult with ICANN until May 23, 2024.
How odd!
Feeling like there is something underneath this they found out like a .org scam / kick back or something like under the table dealings.. No proof, only a gut feeling something else is going on here..
G.Levine, Zak Muscovitch or Berryhill get my vote for next ICANN President.
Feeling good
Thank you for sharing this news about Göran Marby stepping down as CEO of ICANN. It is certainly unexpected and will be interesting to see who steps in to fill his role. ICANN plays a crucial role in the functioning of the internet, so it will be important for the organization to choose a strong leader who can effectively guide it moving forward.
