Here’s who is knocking on the door of the top 10.
Every month I publish a list of the top 10 domain registrars for .com, ranked both for that month’s new registrations and total .com domains under management. This week, a reader asked if I would occasionally publish a list of the next 10 or so registrars. It’s a good idea, so here it is.
This data is from August, the most recent data at ICANN because ICANN delays publication by three months.
First, let’s look at the monthly data showing the registrars 11-20 based on August’s new .com registrations (updated to 23 because I missed a few):
11. Wix 69,445
12. CentralNic 64,976
13. Chengdu West Dimension Digital Technology Co., Ltd. 61,583
14. NameSilo, LLC 57,309
15. Alibaba 54648
16. IONOS 52,952
17. Media Elite Holdings Limited 47,362
18. OwnRegistrar, Inc. 45,369
19. Name.com, Inc. 36,914
20. Atak Domain Bilgi Teknolojileri A.S. 35,784
21. Squarespace Domains LLC 31,486
22. Sav.com, LLC 29,254
23. Jiangsu Bangning Science & technology Co. Ltd. 26,408
There is a lot of variation month to month in the new registration data. A registrar might get a bulk order or run a promo. However, you’ll often see up-and-coming registrars on this list, such as Sav.com. Some of these registrars pop into the top 10 from time to time, too.
Now, let’s look at the #11-25 for registrars with the most .com domains under management at the end of August.
11. GMO Internet, Inc. d/b/a Onamae.com 2,655,587
12. Dynadot 2,610,335

18. Xin Net Technology Corporation 1,211,549
19. Amazon Registrar, Inc. 931,525
20. CSC Corporate Domains, Inc. 887,962
21. Automattic Inc. (WordPress.com) 816,493
22. DNSPod, Inc. 728,239
23. Gandi SAS 718,826
24. Realtime Register B.V. 699,287
25. Squarespace Domains LLC 686,777
Several website builders fall into the top 25 list, including Wix, WordPress and Squarespace. They continue to take market share away from other registrars.
This story was updated to reflect a few ommissions.
Thanks for doing this Andrew, it ‘s good to see just how far out they are, and how “big” their domain registrations are: eg: #11 at 2,655,587 vs #25 at 686,777.
Another idea (don’t know if it’s feasible though) is to see how registrars change over time, especially after any significant event that happens at one of them.
